Helen C. Verkuilen, 83 year old resident of Little Falls died Wednesday, March 28 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, April 3 at 11:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Joseph Herzing officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 2 from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Emblom Brenny Funeral Service in Little Falls and from 9:30-10:45 AM on Tuesday at the funeral home. The burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. A Christian Mothers Rosary will be said at 4:30 P.M. followed by Parish Prayers at 7:00 P.M. on Monday evening.
Helen Claire (Hasling) Verkuilen was born August 13, 1934 in Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota to Robert N. & Elsie M. (Spalding) Hasling. She grew up in Aitkin where she attended and graduated from Aitkin High School with the Class of 1952. She attended the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph graduating with a teaching degree in 1956. Helen taught fifth grade for one year in St. Louis Park. She was united in marriage to Bob “Veek” Verkuilen on June 22, 1957 at St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin. Following their marriage, Helen and Bob moved to Little Falls. She worked as a receptionist at the Little Falls Medical Center for several years and then as a homemaker raising the couples five children. Helen enjoyed traveling, puzzles and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She served on the St. Mary’s School Board and Religious Education Board, taught CCD classes, was a member of the Christian Mothers and volunteered for many years at St. Gabriel’s Gift Shop.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Bob “Veek” Verkuilen of Little Falls; children, Karen (Leo) Ringwelski of Detroit Lakes, Mary Erickson of Woodbury, David (Kay) Verkuilen of Little Falls, John (Michelle) Verkuilen of Sartell, Mark Verkuilen of Little Falls; grandchildren, Alyssa, Dan, Beth, Tom, Zack, Rachel, Laura, Eric, Jack, Allie, Claire, Scott, Greta; great-grandchildren, Ethan, Elijah, Maddy and Stella.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Black and a brother, Bob Hasling.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Mary of Lourdes Schools or St. Mary’s Church
