1939-2019

Fr. John Philip Phil Suehr, osc, was born Oct. 17, 1939, to H. Arthur and Dorothy Louise (Haberkern) Suehr in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He died June 7, 2019, in Onamia, Minnesota, in Mille Lacs Health System long-term care.

He graduated from Our Lady of the Lake Seminary in Syracuse, Indiana, in 1959.He joined the Crosiers as a novice and was vested in the Crosier habit on Aug. 27, 1959, in Hastings, Nebraska. Phil made his first profession of vows in Hastings on Aug. 28, 1960. He was ordained a Crosier priest June 4, 1966, in Fort Wayne. Fr.Phil then attended the Crosier House of Studies in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and St. Francis College, also in Fort Wayne, where he graduated in 1966. He also attended Hastings College (Hastings, Nebraska); Fordham University (Bronx, New York) and Catholic University of America (Washington, DC). Fr. Phil earned a masters degree in counseling from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, in 1976.

Fr. Phil spent his years in ministry serving in different capacities including as a faculty member at St. Cecilia High School in Hastings; Stepinac High School in White Plains, New York; Crosier House of Studies and Bishop Dwenger High School both in Fort Wayne; Holy Cross Academy in Kensington, Maryland, and St. Martin Grade School in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He also served as parish associate for Catholic Social Services in Thief River Falls, Minnesota; pastor at Holy Trinity Parish, St. Cecilia Parish, Christ the Redeemer Parish, all in Tennessee, and parochial vicar at Assumption Parish in Washington, D.C. and St. Stephen Church in Toledo, Ohio; and chaplain at St. Ritas Holy Angels Church and Providence Hospital, both in Sandusky, Ohio. Finally, Fr. Phil served the sacramental and liturgical needs at The Commons of Providence in Sandusky until his retirement.

He is survived by his brothers David and Raymond, his extended family, and his Crosier confreres.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Crosier Priory church in Onamia. Committal will be in the priory cemetery.
