Leander John Maus was born on October 29th, 1936, at home in Buh Township to parents Alma (Heinen) and Albert Maus. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Pierz. Leander would join the army in 1960 and serve his country in the Korean War. Lee built missile silos during his time overseas and served his country with pride. Leader was united in marriage to Johanna Hayes on August 22nd, 1966, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. After leaving the army, Lee began to work for Lenard Pohlkamp at the Pierz Farmers Mill. He would work there for many years before buying the business along with several other coworkers. Lee would retire from the Feedmill in the late 90s after having worked there for over 30 years. In his retirement, Leander worked various jobs, including roofing with Tretter Roofing and electrical work with Faust Electric. His favorite job he did during his retirement was to drive school bus for the Pierz school district.

Leander would serve his community in many ways. He coached and played both fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball. He volunteered with the Lions Club and at the Pierz Villa helping with bingo and pushing wheelchairs. Lee’s faith was an important part of his life, and he dedicated his time and prayers during many adoration services. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus for many years and volunteered to cook at many meals especially making pancakes at the KC breakfasts. In his retirement, Lee would also meet up with several close friends to have morning coffee at the Red Roster.

In his free time, Lee enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping. He always enjoyed being outdoors, especially watching wildlife. His pride and joy, however, was his garden. He always shared his heirloom lettuce for people to enjoy, and many said his red dahlias looked like roses; they were so beautiful.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Janell (Curtis) Gapinski of St. Cloud, and Renee (Brian Massmann) Maus of Sauk Centre; and sister, Sister Margaret Maus OSB of St. Scolastica in St. Cloud.

Leander is preceded in death by his wife Johanna Maus; parents, Alma (Heinen) and Albert Maus; brothers, Werner Maus, and Gilbert Maus; and sister Julianna Kahl.
