Wilfrida Freda Schmitt, 90 year old resident of Buckman, MN, died Friday, December 11, 2015, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 18, 2015 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Buckman, MN, with Fr. Kenneth Popp officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 8:00 p.m on Thursday, December 17, 2015 and 9:30 10:30 p.m. Friday, December 18th all at the church.
There will be a Rosary by the Christian Mothers and the St. Michaels Catholic Aid Council at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at the church immediately followed by the Pierz American Legion Auxiliary service, aSecular Franciscan prayer service at 5:30 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:00 p.m.
Wilfrida Freda Ernestine Gohl was born on May 12, 1925 in Buckman, Minnesota the daughter of William E. Mary R. (Suess) Gohl. She attended grade school at St. Michaels in Buckman, St. Francis High School in Little Falls and St. Francis School of Nursing in Breckenridge, MN, which was affiliated with St. Marys in Rochester, MN. Freda married her childhood sweetheart, James Schmitt, on July 18, 1951, at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Buckman. Her nursing career included a clinic in Grangeville, ID, St. Gabriels Hospital in Little Falls, St. Marys Villa in Pierz and the First Response Team in Buckman. Freda was an avid sports fan. Her favorites were football and baseball. She participated in sports as well including golf, softball, horseshoes and bowling. Freda also enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and spending time at the cabin on Platte Lake, her home away from home. She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Buckman, the Nurses Association, Catholic Aid, Christian Mothers, American Legion Auxiliary in Pierz and Hillman, the Platte Lake Association and the Secular Franciscans. Freda also sponsored and supported the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging in Guatemala.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Geoffrey L. (Joyce) Schmitt of Holdingford, MN and Janet M. Hesch of Rice, MN; brother, Dennis J. (Loretta) Gohl of Nisswa, MN and sister, Phyllis (Francis) Marshik of Circle Pines, MN; grandchildren, Robert (Shannon) Schmitt, Heidi (Peter) Kasella, Zachary (Nicole) Schmitt, Chris (Janel) Hesch, Anthony (Libbie) Hesch and Cathy (finace, Carey Tordsen) Hesch; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Elijah, Callen, and Abraham Kasella and Keegan Schmitt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James N. Schmitt (Dec. 22, 1995); son-in-law, Greg Hesch (March 2, 2011); siblings, infanttwins, William and Mary (Aug. 1, 1930) and infant, Andrew (Aug. 25, 1932), Billy Gohl (Oct. 14,1954) and Alvina Weinke (June 4, 2011).
